Monday Harvest Report 5-28-12

For my readers in the US happy Memorial Day!  And to those that have sacrificed so much to serve us in the armed forces, Thank You!!  After a trip to the cemetery to visit our Grandparents graves we are off to have some fun with the kids today.  All of the fun we will have today is a direct result of the efforts and sacrifice of those that serve and defend us and I am very greatful for all they have done!!

The garden is in full production mode now and our harvest totals will be soaring over the next few weeks.  We have radishes, potatoes, peas, green onions and more all on the way very soon.  Not to mention all the summer crops that are also coming along well!

We had an other good harvest of lettuce this week with just over a pound harvested for us to eat and about another pound feed to the chickens.  We still have quite a bit of lettuce on the way but it will slow down soon.  We also harvest chives this week to flavor several of our dinners!!

The star for the week though was our strawberries.  We had two really big harvest this week each at about 2 1/2 pounds.  They are sweet and delicious and the kids are loving them.  With 5 pounds in the fridge we will even be able to get some in the freezer for next winter!!

Here’s this weeks totals:

Lettuce – 1 lbs

Strawberries 5 lbs

Chives – not weighed

Eggs – 28

Total – 6 lbs

Our annual total now stands at 43.5 pounds.  That total should really start to increase as the spring crops start to mature.  Right now we stand at a little more that 5% of our goal of 800 pounds for the year!  Be sure to see how other gardeners are doing all over the world by visiting the Monday Harvest Report at Daphne’s Dandelions!

Those strawberries are beautiful. I am really looking forward to our berry patch producing a harvest but have a while yet before it will do so. Looks promising though with all the flowering and green fruit starting to be set. I also noticed the summer crop of raspberries are starting to set flowers so raspberries are not that far off for us either.

Happy Memorial Day to you and your family.

Those strawberries look delicious! And a goal of 800 lbs.. that’s impressive! I’m keeping track of my harvest weight for the first time this year and I have 43 lbs right now too. My goal was 300 lbs, perhaps I should be more ambitious. How big is your garden? And what zone are you in?

    • Rick says:

Julie, we have a fairly large garden. About 1100 square feet. We also grow some high yielding crops like potatoes, onions and melons. Between those 3 crops we will have nearly half of that 800 pounds. In addition to that we grow year round which gives us an edge. Last year our total was about 730 pounds.

So many strawberries! We only have a few that are started to redden…Oh, I can’t wait! I can only hope for a basket full like yours, though! Enjoy those berries!

Oh I wish I could produce strawberries like that. The few that i do produce invariably are have eaten by slugs – very frustrating.

WOW! Shocked at the size of your strawberry harvest. Amazing.

Your harvest looks great. I don’t think our potatoes will be ready for another month. How did you get them to come so early? Nice work!
