Monday Harvest Report 6-25-2012

The weather here in Utah has been brutal the past week.  Temperatures  have been in the high 90′s and we even had 100′s both Saturday and Sunday.  Wow!!  That is really hot for June.  We usually don’t see 100′s until late July and August.  The other thing that is missing from our weather is rain.  We usually don’t get a lot of rain in the summer but normally when the temps get this high we start having afternoon thunder storms.  None of that this year, just hot and dry!!  That means we are watering our garden about every three day just to keep things alive.

We did have another good harvest week.  The peas were at their peak early in the week.  We picked another 9 pounds on Wednesday.  But they are now slowing down, we only had about 2 pounds to pick on Saturday.  I think we will get 2 more pickings before the plants finally give out and we pull them up to feed to the chickens.

The remainder of our broccoli was ready to harvest this week.  I cut 6 or 7 more heads.  We will leave these plants in for another month or so and let them produce side shoots.  Once the other crops in the bed our done we will pull everything out and plant some fall peas in that bed!

We also harvested the first of the green onions we planted from sets in the box garden.  We stick these onions around the edge of a grow box every year and harvest them as needed through the summer.  This keeps us from sneaking into our storage onions before they have bulbed up.  These weight about an ounce a piece right now.  We used several this week along with some chives to add some flavor to our scrambled eggs!

Here’s this weeks totals:

Peas – 11.25 lbs

Green Onions – .25 lbs

Broccoli – 2.25 lbs

Eggs – 30

Total Produce –  13.75 Lbs

Our annual total now stands at 78.5 pounds or about 9.5% of our annual goal of 800 pounds.  We are joining Daphne’s Dandelions for her Monday Harvest Report this week along with the Tuesday Garden Party at An Oregon Cottage.  Thanks guys for providing these great web hops!

I’m glad to see i’m not the only one overloaded in peas :)

    Nice broccoli and pea harvest.
I’m south of you and we are living in scorching heat for the past 3 weeks, some of the potted plants need to be water 2x a day or else they are fried.

We’ve given up on some of our potted plants. It got so hot so early this year that many of them never really got a chance to get established before they were toasting!!

  3. I so envy your pea harvest. What type of peas are they that they are still producing in 90 degree heat?

    • Rick says:

This year we planted Little Marvel. I don’t think they would still be producing if they hadn’t already bloomed before the heat hit. I think this will be the last week for sure, the plants are really starting to look rough in the heat!!

  4. Annual goal of 800 pounds! And here I am just hoping to end the year in the black. I have got to make bigger goals (and a bigger garden.)

  5. Michelle says:

Wow, lots of lovely peas! I hope your early hot weather doesn’t put a dent in the crop.

I wish I was overloaded with peas.
What do you do with all those eggs?

Hello! Thanks for visiting my blog! Your peas harvest looks wonderful. I don’t harvest as much as you do but I should really make more of an effort to weigh it! 800 lb goal! Wow! That is a good idea to put green onions around the edge of the beds. I will have to remember that. Nancy

Very nice pea harvest! I never would have though Utah would hit 100 before SC! We’re suppose to get there this weekend, so not too far behind. Hopefully rain will come your way soon.

Whoa man that is a lot of peas! Great harvests. We’ve been topping 100 for weeks, way too early for me too.

You have had a great run on your pea patch this year. Really impressive harvests from it. How much area have you got planted in peas?

  11. Your peas and broccoli look so gorgeous, that’s a ton of produce!

  12. Dave Velten says:

Great harvest of peas and broccoli for gardening in 90+ conditions. Last week in MA we had three 100+ days in a row and no air conditioning for me, but the tomatoes and peppers loved it. I also plant onion sets along the edges of the squash beds with a lettuce in each corner, works pretty well.

  13. Bee Girl says:

Oh wow! your peas are amazing! Ours come in ounce by ounce! What is your trick?

  14. What a wonderful harvest you have. We are slowly bu surely making room for more veggies. So far, there are mostly flowers, but we are making one more raised bed which will have veggies in it, and it is right nest to the compost bin.

    Happy Veggie Gardening

What zone is your garden? I’m zone 8-9 in Bakersfield, CA and peas season is long gone.

    • Rick says:

We are Zone 5b or 6 a depending on what map you look at. We actually sit close to a very low lying area near the river that I figure makes us 5b. Much different that Bakersfield, peas are just finishing up here this week and we are still a month away from tomatoes and other summer crops.

We pulled our peas out just last night. Always sad to see them go, but glad to have the space for our late planting of corn!

  17. What a productive garden you have! My peas are just starting to produce, and I fixed some for supper a couple of nights ago. I would love to send you some of our cold weather and rain that we’ve been having tin the Pacific Northwest, but you’d need to send us some of your heat!
