Hey guys! It’s been a while since I’ve done a Monday Harvest report. That is not really for lack of harvests, but instead just lack of time!!
Spring seems to be coming early to the Salt Lake Valley this year. The cold temperatures broke up around the 25th of February and we have had a solid 2 weeks of beautiful warm weather with temps in the 50’s and even the 60’s. We did have a nice rainy day yesterday which brought some welcome water to the garden.
I’ve already done a little planting in the garden and have plans to get quite a bit more done over the next few days. Just cool weather crops like lettuce so far, but I will be planting some carrots, turnips and radishes some time this week!
This weeks harvest included this beautiful box of overwintered carrots. We are starting to run short of time before these start to set seed heads so i picked a bunch this week. This box came in at just over 7 pounds! Add that to the 4 pounds I picked last week and we have been eating a lot of carrots. I was thrilled to hear one of my teenagers say to her mom that she just loved the way the home grown carrots taste! “So much better than the ones we get from Costco”! I guess all this gardening and home grown food is finally sinking in with them!!
We also harvested a nice amount of greens. This basket is a mix of Swiss Chard and spinach and weighted in at just under a pound. These plants are really starting to rebound from the winter and are growing like crazy. It will be nice to have this addition to our meals for a month or two!! Spinach is one of our favorite greens so we always look forward to these heavy spring pickings!
You know it’s almost spring when you see this site! The garlic we planted last fall is up and off to a great start!
You can see the spring seedlings are coming along well. On the right is a batch of lettuce seedlings that are ready to go out to the garden this week. On the left are mostly spring Cole crops.
Don’t forget if you would like to learn how to raise your own seedlings, my video course will teach you everything you need to know in about 2 hours time! It is on sale for only $15 for the rest of the month!!
Here’s our harvest totals for the week and year:
Carrots – 7 lbs
Spinach – .75 lbs
Total – 7.75 lbs
That moves our annual total to 18 pounds. We are almost 10 pounds ahead of last years totals so I feel like we are off to a good start this year!!
