I’m excited to try this! I have had great luck with a wind barrier, dense planting, and no mulch, but am always looking for ways to improve my peppers. Thanks for the info, I’ve just ordered 30% cloth and am excited for gardening season!

In reply to DW. Peppers are mostly wind-pollinated so it isn't a big concern. Bee's can help but aren't required. And the cloth doesn't completely exclude bees.

It is interesting for us to note that these exact same approaches have proven to be the key to successfully growing tomatoes through the hot summers in Phoenix and Tucson, where daytime highs can reach 110 – 115°F! The use of raised beds, drip systems on timers, thick straw mulching and shade cloth allows the pollen to be under the critical 90°F for enough of the day to continue producing tomatoes.

In reply to Michele Doyyle. I've never had any problems with grass. Some people say it compresses too much and doesn't allow water in, but I have never really noticed an issue. Of course, I use drip irrigation right at the base of the plants so the water always gets in.

We tried mulching with cut grass this year. It definitely helped keep the weeds down, but I am not sure it is that great for the plants. Is it a good idea to mulch with cut grass?

We noticed several years ago that our bell peppers seemed to do so much better when they were planted where they got a little shade especially in the afternoon. This year we deliberately planted in an area that doesn’t get the required 6-8 hours of daily sunlight. They were a little slow to take off but they are now beautiful plants and the fruit is gorgeous. Little did we know we were on the cutting edge .
