One of my favorite gardening authors Elliot Coleman, refers to this time of year as the Persephone months. This has reference to the story of the Greek goddess Persephone who according to the myths spends the winter months with her husband Hyades. During the time that she is gone her mother Demiter mourns and neglects her duties as the goddess of the harvest. This according to the ancient Greeks is why we have winter! Liz, yes you can start the transplants outside as well.  I just like to have them in a controlled environment away from the weather extremes at first, then I harden them off later.  Plus starting them indoors saves me room in the garden to let the summer crops keep producing!!]]></description>
