Making your own Homemade Tortilla Chips

Making your own homemade tortilla chips is super easy!    I had no idea how simple it was, otherwise I would have been making them all the time.

Chip Dilemma-Making your own Homemade Tortilla Chips

Homemade salsa….need I say more.  It is one of my favorites!!  We just can’t wait until those first few tomatoes start to ripen so we can make homemade salsa.  It is so yummy when it comes from your own garden tomatoes.  It has so much more flavor!   The only problem with salsa is what to eat it with?  You have to have chips as the method to get that yummy salsa to your mouth right? However, they are not exactly the healthiest snack.

Tortilla chips are definitely a food weakness for me.  They are a little addicting and once I start eating them it is hard to stop.  I just love salsa so I had to find a healthier tortilla chip that I could splurge on every once in a while and not feel too guilty about.

A better tortilla chip.

This definitely was a chip dilemma, making your own homemade tortilla chips seems like way too much work even if it was for homemade salsa?   I went on a search for a recipe for quick and easy homemade tortilla chips. The chip recipe needed to still needed to have the yummy, salty, crunchy goodness like the ones from the store.  I looked around on the internet for some ideas and came up with a recipe of my own.

We had a birthday party at our home and I served these homemade chips and salsa as a snack.  I wanted to test it out on my extended family.  It turned out that they really liked the homemade chips. In fact, no one could believe that these were homemade chips.  They thought for sure they were store bought.  I even had chips from the store that I put out just in case no one liked them.  Everyone ate up the homemade chips and left the chips from the store alone.

Tortilla Chips

Homemade whole wheat tortilla chips

These whole wheat tortilla chips taste so good and are so easy to make.  I make homemade tortillas once a week so I always have some on hand in the freezer.  I just pull them out of the freezer and spray with olive oil and cut and cook them.  That is all there is to it.  It is so simple and they are amazing.  I love these chips and I don’t even feel that guilty eating them!

How to make Homemade Tortilla chips

You will need 8 whole wheat tortillas- I roll them out really thin. (We use our Homemade Tortillas)   If you would rather not use whole wheat tortillas, you can also find your favorite corn tortilla recipe and try making chips out of those also. Just follow the instructions below and it should turn out the same as these chips.

Spray tortillas on both sides with olive oil Spray or brush both sides with a pastry brush.  Layer 4 tortillas on top of each other and cut in triangles with a pizza cutter. They don’t need to be cut perfectly like chips from the store. The different sizes of these chips are what makes them unique and gives them the homemade look, which always means they will taste better.

Directions

Arrange a single layer of tortillas on the baking sheet.   I end up using 3 baking sheets. Shake some sea salt on them.   Cook at 350 degrees for 5 minutes, remove the tray from oven and turn the homemade chips over and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes.

I turn them over each by hand, you can use tongs so you don’t burn yourself.  I don’t really like this step in baking the chips.  It is a little time consuming but I really haven’t found a better way to do it.   It is an important step because it ensures that each chip is cooked evenly on both sides. You will need to watch them closely so they don’t burn.  Once they are done let them cool.  They will crisp up as they cool.

Homemade chips

It is such an easy recipe, that is all there is to it.  Just add a little oil cut and bake and voila you have your own yummy homemade chips to snack on.  I don’t even feel that guilty eating them because they only have 4 ingredients and are so much healthier for you than those greasy gross chips from the store. So go ahead and indulge and enjoy that salsa by making your own homemade tortilla chips!!!

The next party you host pull out your chip and dip dish and serve these yummy homemade chips.  It is a crowd pleaser and everyone will think you are amazing for making homemade chips.  Just don’t tell them how easy they are.

This same tortilla recipe can be used for so many different recipes.  I use it to make tacos, burritos and also taco bowls.  I hope you enjoy this easy recipe along with all the other ideas you can make with it too.

I certainly make tortillas on a regular basis, but I’ve never tried chips.

[…] When they are done, fill them with whatever you can find in your garden or farmer’s market.  I make homemade refried beans and taco seasoning (recipes to come in a later post) which makes tacos so much better according to Rick.  We stuff our tacos with, garden tomatoes, cucumbers, or zucchini.
