What is my Garden Zone?

This “What to Plant in March” guide is specifically geared towards those of you who live in zones 3 & 4. I know it’s normally pretty chilly in your area this time of year, but there are some plants that you can start in March!

If you don’t know what your garden zone is, click this link to find out!

Not in zones 3 or 4? You can check out our articles below on the different zones.

  • Zones 9 & 10

What is my Last Frost date?

Before we get started there are a few things that you should keep in mind when you are planting in zones 3 & 4 in March.

First, don’t forget to figure out the last frost date in your area. It’s important to know what the last frost date is so that you can time when to start seeds indoors and outdoors.

While this post will give you a general guide of when to plant in March, it’s a good idea to do some research to figure out the exact dates for your area. This will differ based on if you are planting warm or cool-season crops.

  • You can start warm-season crops indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.
  • Cool-season crops can be started indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost date.
  • Cool-season crops can be started outdoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date.

Gardening in March Tips

An important garden task you can work on in March is garden planning! In zones 3 & 4 you may have to wait until closer to the end of March to start planting (depending on your area), so take some time at the beginning of the month to plan your garden!

You can also stock up on garden tools & supplies, like the ones below!

  • Garden canvas grow bags
  • Gardening gloves
  • Garden knife
  • Plant labels

Here’s a video we did on what you can be planting in March if you live in Zones 3 and 4:

What can I plant in March?

In zones 3 & 4, you are going to be planting mostly cool-season crops. These crops can handle colder temperatures.

Seeds you can start indoors (end of March):

Because it’s normally still pretty cold in March in zones 3 & 4, you will need to start seeds indoors! Unfortunately, it’s not quite time for planting outdoors in zones 3 & 4!  You will want to start these seeds indoors at the end of March (Remember to refer to the last frost date in your area!)

Broccoli

We love broccoli, so we always plant a lot of it each year! We freeze broccoli so that we can eat it year-round! It’s also a staple in our favorite creamy vegetable soup recipe!

  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Swiss Chard
  • Arugula
